  • Christine Stevens- Culbreath, usually called “Tina,” was born in Alexandria, VA and now lives in Winchester.

Christine Stevens-Culbreath, known to most as “Tina,” was born in Alexandria, VA and now calls Winchester home. Growing up was a struggle for Tina as a bi-racial child, living in Section 8 Housing that didn’t always feel safe. Raised by a single mother doing her best to raise three young girls while facing her own demons, Tina’s early life was marked by challenge. Her father passed away from a drug overdose when she was seven years old, and her mother turned to alcohol to self-medicate. By age 8, she was helping to care for two younger siblings. Though the odds weren’t stacked in her favor, with the help of caring mentors, she beat those odds.

Together with her husband Rodney, Tina has built a strong family as they overcame obstacles and set goals for themselves and their 6 remarkable children. After several attempts that were interrupted due to outside circumstances (including adopting a family member’s children), she eventually completed school and returned to college once her kids were older. Then in 2014, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer. Through that process, she discovered a bigger purpose in life – a new direction.

That direction has become her life’s work: helping to mold and positively influence delicate impressionable youth and communities through powerful workshops, processes, and mentoring – the exact support she needed when she was THAT kid. Today, her life is fulfilled in her role as the Founder and Executive Director of The I’M JUST ME MOVEMENT, inspiring not only the minds of young people but individuals and families in their communities, encouraging others to “LIVE LIFE FORWARD.”

Rodney Culbreath lives in Winchester, VA with his wife and co-founder of I’M JUST ME MOVEMENT, Tina. His personal journey and struggles as a child inspired him to mentor young people through the organization. He intimately understands the challenges many youth face today: poverty and street life, going hungry, being homeless, getting bullied or attacked, raising siblings while a parent is incarcerated, getting to school with no electricity at home, and looking around to find few caring or stable adults – because he was THAT kid.

Most importantly, Rodney knows what it’s like to find a mentor and have a safe adult who offers support and encouragement despite limitations. He understands how kids like himself are feeling and can connect with them in a way that helps them feel accepted and nurtured. Because Rodney walks the talk, he inspires youth to move beyond their perceived limitations, transcend their stories, and write a new chapter for themselves. Through his guidance, young people learn about “Living life forward” with attainable goals, helping them create a productive life far beyond their wildest dreams.

Growing up, Rze’ (pronounced “Zay”) was born in Reston, VA, and moved to Winchester, VA. When he came to Millbrook High School at 15, he minimized his differences related to learning and speaking. Though his teachers and family recognized his speech impediment and learning differences, others considered him shy or quiet. Rze’ preferred to hide and often suffered from lower self-esteem.

Along the way, he was teased and bullied for not being as “smart” as other students, with people looking at him differently because he had an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and a teacher’s aide. He experienced bullying from students who didn’t understand what he was going through inside, feeling undervalued and wanting to hide himself. Over time, and with increased maturity, Rze began to realize that everyone has differences and adversities – some come out about it, others don’t.

As the son of Tina and Rodney, he found himself face-to-face with his challenges and chose to build resilience. Today, Rze’s purpose and passion is mentoring youth, showing them what they can achieve by facing challenges head-on and building resilience to overcome adversity, just as he has done.

    LIVE. LIFE. FORWARD.
